In today's era of globalization, the presence of linguistic borrowings and the phenomenon of Spanglish are undeniable. These elements show how language communities can adapt and enrich each other, creating new forms of expression that reflect the diversity and complexity of our linguistic and cultural identities. In his work, Hardach (2024) documents the evolution of Spanglish over decades, emphasizing the emergence of new Spanish varieties due to contact with native languages post-Colonial era. This underscores the dynamics of linguistic exchange and creation driven by cultural interaction.
After reading this, I highlight the influence of English in Salvadoran Spanish and how we have adopted words like "selfie", "googlear", "chatear", "feedback", "shopping", among others, which are already part of our everyday vocabulary, thanks to the influence of social networks and society in general.
This types of reading sources make me reflect on how English has impacted our Salvadoran Spanish. I had not realized before how many words we have adopted from English in our daily lives. It is impressive how language is constantly changing due to the influence of technology and globalization, and how this influence of English can change our perception of language and our own identity.
